Biographical Sketch
Dr. James K. DeOrio is the former Director of the Foot and Ankle Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic Jacksonville and was Chairman of the Orthopedic Department at the Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, Florida for over 15 years. He is a 1977 graduate of the George Washington University Medical School, trained at the Mayo Clinic and performed an AO fellowship in Switzerland. Dr. DeOrio is a frequent contributor to the orthopedic literature in the form of original articles and book chapters and is an Associate Professor of Orthopedics at both Duke and the Mayo Clinic (Emeritus). He is a frequent international lecturer and within the last two years has given presentations in France, Finland, Egypt, Brazil, Ireland, China, Italy, Russia and Germany as well as many presentations in the U.S. His main interest is ankle arthritis and ankle replacements. He is a member of the STAR ankle replacement study group in the United States and has also designed instrumentation for, and taught other surgeons the techniques of performing, the Salto-Talaris, INBONE, STAR and Agility total ankle replacements. He has done more INBONE ankle replacements than anyone in the world (180) and currently does more ankle replacements in the U.S. than any other surgeon. He will be speaking on ankle replacements at the summer meeting of the AOFAS (American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society) in 2009. In addition to his work in ankle arthritis, Dr. DeOrio also does the full complement of foot and ankle surgery. Hence, other published works have included studies in neuroma surgery, lesser toe deformity, metatarsalgia, posterior tibial tendon insufficiency and midfoot arthritis. A graduate of the Air Force Academy in 1970, and a proud former member of the Falcon football team, Dr. DeOrio is also a retired Colonel from the U.S. Air Force.
