| New Treatment Options for Hip AVN Patients |
A recent article on Ortho Supersite mentions that the FDA has recently approved 2 metal-on-metal hip resurfacing devices offered by Birmingham Hip Resurfacing, Smith & Nephew, Memphis, Tenn, and Coromet 2000, Stryker, Mahwah, NJ. Thanks to these new high-tech devices, hip resurfacing is now a much more viable option for patients with hip AVN provided that the AVN is caught early enough. According to the article, hip resurfacing is not exactly new. Though hip resurfacing has not really reached a mainstream status because the only available devices on the market were “off-label” products. From a patient's perspective, who would wish to take a risk of implanting a little known product offered by a company without a track record? Thankfully, the industry and options for hip AVN patients have now changed. Reputable names don't get any bigger than Stryker, a company that makes one of the best knee replacements in the industry. Smith and Nephew have certainly been around the block as well. If you are a hip AVN patient with only surface lesions, it might be time to discuss hip resurfacing with your orthopedic surgeon.
