Lidoderm (Lidocaine Patch 5%)
Manufacturer:
Endo Pharmaceuticals
Intended Uses and Benefits:

Lidoderm patches are 14mm X 10mm adhesive patches containing 5% lidocaine suspended in a gelatinous adhesive material applied to one side of a non-woven polyester felt pad. A thin PET (plastic) film is peeled away, exposing the active agents to air and activating the patch. Each patch contains 700mg of lidocaine in an aqueous base that provides a transfer medium for the lidocaine to slowly absorb into the skin over a 12-hour period. Once applied to the skin, the patches are sticky and flexible enough to stay in place under clothing and with the normal flexing of daily motion.

Doctors usually prescribe Lidoderm patches for Avascular Necrosis/Osteonecrosis patients experiencing pain due to excessive inflammation and swelling around AVN affected joints. The thought is that the absorbed lidocaine can penetrate into the skin and block nerve endings from transmitting pain impulses. These patches are not meant to treat inner-bone related pain, but are reported to help with more topically located areas of pain.

Benefits:
  • Can help with topically located joint pain
  • Reported to reduce pain caused by swelling in joints
  • Can reduce pain associated with the bone resorption processes
  • Non-narcotic pain reliever
